WEEK 3

Autodesk Maya

During the lesson, George talked about Anticipation. Anticipation is a mechanical build-up for force, so It’s important to understand now that all movement is created by external or internal forces. Anticipation is the most natural way to build up internal force to execute dynamic motion.
Bill Tytla, legendary animator, says “Any animation consists of anticipation, action, and reaction.
“An object in motion will remain unless acted on by an unbalanced force.”
This Law applies to everything in the universe, including us. It’s precisely because of this law that anticipating left before walking right results in a conservation of energy.

To practice Anticipation we had to animate a ball with a squirrel tail keeping the relationship between the body and the tail.

Anticipation is the key to describing how much strength and force go into a movement, while squash and stretch are the keys to selling the physical believability of an action.

Unreal Engine

During this week’s session with Serra in Unreal Engine, we continued our exploration from the previous class. Serra provided a detailed walkthrough of setting up levels, taking us through the process step by step. We delved into the practical aspects by opening a sample scene and maneuvering within the Unreal Engine environment. Our hands-on experience included the creation of basic shapes, their movement, and an introduction to fundamental material setup.

A notable focus of this session was Serra’s in-depth guidance on camera placement and configuration. She elucidated the nuances of the level sequencer, drawing parallels to video editing tools like Premiere Pro. The incorporation of camera animations through this tool opened up exciting possibilities for our projects.

The ability to apply materials seamlessly by clicking and dragging, coupled with the efficiency of creating material iterations from a master material, stood out as valuable tools. Excitement brewed within me as I contemplated applying these newfound skills to enhance my scene. Collaboratively, my team and I have already begun discussing our vision for this module. The session has left me eager to translate this knowledge into tangible and creative outputs.
