Potential Topic and appendixes
Our class centres around a thesis proposal, a stepping stone to our final work. This proposal allows us to explore our chosen topic initially.
The key is to identify a research gap or offer a fresh perspective. This could involve novel contributions to the field or even an experiment. To achieve this, a deep dive into existing literature through a comprehensive review is crucial.
My passion for women’s empowerment fuels my interest in this topic. Disney films hold immense influence, shaping how we perceive gender roles from a young age. By analyzing these portrayals, I hope to contribute to a broader conversation about dismantling stereotypes. Everyone can play a role in shifting these mindsets, and focusing on a medium like animation allows me to combine my academic interest with my love for entertainment. This feels like the most authentic way for me to develop this thesis.
My focus for this thesis is the portrayal of gender roles, particularly the representation of women, in Disney films. I want to delve into how the portrayal of men influences women’s roles and how ingrained these ideas are in our society, especially in children. Ultimately, this research aims to demonstrate the evolution of female character representation in Disney films and argue for the possibility of further positive change.
After a recent review with Nigel, I realized the need to refine my bibliography and identify a more specific research area. To achieve this focus, I decided to delve deeper into the portrayal of gender roles within Disney princess films.

This study proposes to answer the following questions:
- How have Disney Princess films portrayed gender inequality through performative acts?
- Has the representation of female characters changed over the years?
- How has the performative representation of gender through Disney Princess Production influenced children over the past century?
To answer the above research questions, the objectives of this study are as follows:
- to analyse the messages about performative gender inequality conveyed in Disney Princess feature films and animation.
- to identify the stereotypes that are already embedded in society.
