WEEK 5 – Creating the Tardis

Blender to the Rescue!

For modelling the TARDIS, I knew I needed a user-friendly tool. That’s where my old friend Blender came in. Its intuitive interface made the whole process much smoother. As the first thing i started to meticulously craft that signature boxy silhouette.

Shading the TARDIS

Once the basic shape was done, it was time to bring some color to the party. I used the shader editor to create a new material – a perfect match for the TARDIS’s worn blue wood. I also created an emissive material for those iconic glowing windows and the beacon light on top. Now the TARDIS is starting to feel truly alive!

Illustrator: Detailing the Door

For that extra touch of authenticity, I headed over to Illustrator to create the intricate writing on the TARDIS’s front door. Those little details make all the difference, grounding the model in the Doctor Who universe.

Onward to the Final Touches!

With the TARDIS model complete, it’s time to integrate it into the scene and add some finishing flourishes. I started animating the TARDIS entering the scene. Let’s just say that bringing this iconic time machine to life with smooth animation was a bigger challenge than I initially anticipated. There were some bumps along the road. For this animation on Unreal Engine, I decided to animate the opacity in the different materials.

With the TARDIS model textured, animated, and (hopefully) ready for its close-up, it’s time to refine the scene.
